Ethiopia
I first went to Ethiopia in 1980. The last trip was in 2012, as a stopping off point on my way to and from Mozambique. This last trip to Ethiopia was to meet with the client for the Millenium Hydro Project.

Finchaa Sugar Estate - 1980
This was, at the time, supposed to be a 10,000 Ha estate located in eastern Ethiopia on a spur of the Blue Nile, but only 6800 Ha was developed. I did not get to visit the site but I did visit two other existing sugar estates whilst there. Metahara and Wonji. I spent 5 weeks in Ethiopia, most of it in the Addis Ababa office during July/August. The country was ruled by a communist regime at that time and was at war. The Soviets and Cubans were assisting and were highly present in Addis, which was under a night-time curfew. My participation was mainly doing the preliminary design for the infrastructure works, which included premanent house, recreatiion facilities, hospital, offices, various town buildings, town planning, etc.Millenium Hydro Project
This was a 5000MW hydro development. We did not bid on this but I visited with the client for the Mechanical/Electrical
portion in late 2012.
